The Schedule Shift Has Saved the Environment and Taxpayers Millions of Dollars

Guilford County, N.C. – Starting Monday, June 15, Guilford County Schools (GCS) employees will begin a modified work week for the summer months. Employees will work 10 hours a day, four days a week, and will be off on Fridays.

Over the past 15 summers, the modified schedule has reduced energy use and operational costs as well as provided an extended weekend for employees. This reduction in utility use aligns with Board Policy 6530 Energy and Resource Conservation.

Beginning on June 15, all 11 and 12-month employees will follow the modified schedule, working from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and will be off on Fridays. School and district offices will be open to the public Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The summer schedule will continue through Friday, Aug. 14. GCS will return to the regular five-day, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. workweek on Monday, Aug. 17.

GCS schools and offices will be closed on Thursday, June 18, in observation of Juneteenth. All schools and district offices will also be closed to the public from June 29 to July 3.
